The Canadian Olympic Committee, the Canadian Olympic School Program and "olympicschool.ca" (collectively, hereinafter “Olympic School”) provides Olympic-themed educational resources.  This website (the “Website”) offers interactive and other educational programs, lesson plans and the opportunity to participate in contests and other special events.  The Website is designed to be used by teachers, students in grades 2 through 7, their parents and anyone else interested in the Olympics and sports.

Olympic School respects the privacy of Website users and has drafted this Privacy Policy to provide notice of the personal information that Website users may provide to us online and the purposes for which we use such information.  By “personal information”, we mean information that identifies a natural person.

We comply with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) (Canada) if and when we engage in commercial activities, and even when we are not legally required to comply with PIPEDA, we adhere to the 10 principles of fair information practice in the Canadian Standards Association Model Code for the protection of personal information that form Schedule 1 to PIPEDA.

Olympic School may change this Privacy Policy from time to time.  The date on which the Privacy Policy was last changed will be posted at the top of this page so that Website users can review the Privacy Policy if it has been changed since their last visit.  In this way, Website Users have access to up-to-date information about our personal information management practices.

The Website is operated by Olympic School’s office in Vancouver, Canada.  By submitting personal information online, Website users are consenting to the transfer of their personal information to British Columbia, Canada and to the storage of their personal information in B.C.  We retain personal information for so long as it is required to provide Website users with access to the Website and the services they request.

Personal Information We Collect

Olympic School asks for personal information that we require to provide services that a Website user requests online and to administer, assess and improve Website content.   For example, if a teacher wants to register to access the Teachers’ Section of the Website, he or she will be asked to provide his or her first name, e-mail address, the name and location of the school at which he or she has a permanent teaching position (if any), the grade that he or she teaches and for his or her language preference.  A student who wants to enroll in a program will be asked to provide his or her first name, e-mail address, the name and location of the school he or she attends, and for his or her language preference.

The services that require us to collect and use personal information include interactive and other educational programs, contests and automatic monthly e-mail updates on our programs and activities.  Any personal information that an individual chooses to provide to Olympic School is provided on a voluntary basis.

Use of Personal Information

We use personal information that we collect to provide access to our Website, respond to comments, questions and/or requests for information, provide updates and information on program content and provide services that Website users request, such as program enrollment and contest entry, and to notify individuals entitled to a prize under contest rules).

We also use personal information provided by Website users for administration of our services and for program and activity planning.  For example, we assess the popularity and usefulness to students of particular programs by tracking the volume of users of a program and the demographics of those users.  We might learn, for example, that a program is utilized more in schools in one city over another, or is of particular interest to students in a certain grade.

Disclosure of Personal Information

Olympic School will never willfully disclose your personal information to any third party without first receiving your permission, unless required to do so by law.  Olympic School does not rent, trade or sell the personal information we are provided by Website users to others or share that personal information with other organizations for commercial purposes, except in circumstances where disclosure is required for a reorganization of our operations or a proposed or actual financing, assignment, sale or other disposal of some or all of our operations or assets, including for the purpose of permitting an interested or actual purchaser to determine whether a transaction should proceed.

Olympic School uses reputable external service providers, for example to assist us with the maintenance of our information technology systems, and may permit our service providers access to personal information provided to us where access is required to provide the service.  In our contracts with our service providers, we require them to have appropriate safeguards in place to protect any personal information to which we permit them access.

We will disclose personal information provided by Website users where we are required to do so by law.

We use the personal information provided to us by Website users to compile statistics and we provide aggregate statistical data, from which we have removed personal information, to our sponsor RBC for its marketing purposes.  For example, we may provide RBC with a list of the schools in a city in which teachers have registered to access the Teachers’ Section of the Website.  We do not provide RBC with the names or other personal information about teachers or any other Website users who provide us with their personal information.  Information about RBC can be found at http://www.rbc.com.
